A backup internet connection keeps your registers, card payments, and check-ins running when your regular internet goes down. Once your backup is connected, it takes over automatically the moment your main connection drops, so your team doesn't need to do anything. This guide walks you through choosing a backup option.
While we want to support as many things as possible offline, a lot of our technology works best when the internet is available. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are acquired and managed as a direct relationship between franchisees, and we encourage you to find the best option possible. These backups are intended to truly be backups and support you temporarily in emergency situations. Your number one priority should always be to get the internet back up and running.
Choosing the right option
There are two kinds of backup to choose from. Both work well; the right one depends on where your store is located:
- Cellular hotspot (T-Mobile, Verizon, or AT&T). A small device that connects to a cell network. It's portable and quick to set up, but it only works as well as the carrier's signal at your location.
- Satellite (Starlink). A dish that connects to satellites overhead. It works in places with weak cell coverage, but the dish needs a clear view of the sky and takes a little more effort to set up.
Recommended plans
These plans have been vetted for running store equipment. Prices are approximate, change often, and don't include taxes and fees, so confirm current pricing with the provider before you buy.
20GB(min) data and an Ethernet port on the device are required
| Data Allowance | Provider / Plan | Monthly Cost | Device Cost |
| 100 GB | Starlink | $55/mo | $199 |
| 100 GB | T-Mobile Business Hotspot | $50/mo | Sold Separately $8.34/month |
| 100 GB | Verizon Pro Data Device | $75/mo | Sold Separately Price Varies |
| 60 GB | Verizon Plus Data Device | $45/mo | See Verizon list above |
| 45 GB | AT&T Business Data Advantage | $150/mo | Sold Separately Price Varies |
| 25 GB | T-Mobile Business Hotspot | $25/mo | See T-Mobile list above |
| 20 GB | AT&T Business Data Advantage | $90/mo | See AT&T list above |
Getting your backup set up
- Check your coverage. Confirm which carrier (or Starlink) works best at your store.
- Pick a plan. Choose a business plan with at least 20 GB of data per month from the table above.
- Buy the plan and device. Order directly from the provider. For cellular plans, buy a compatible hotspot device along with the plan.
- Contact tech support. Open a ticket to let us know your backup has arrived. We'll help you connect it to your store's network so it takes over automatically if your internet goes down.
